1. Introduction and Acceptance of Terms

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of kefrentcars.com ("the Site"), operated by KefRentCars, based in Keflavík, Reykjanesbær, Iceland. By accessing the Site, submitting a booking enquiry, or completing a reservation through the Site, you agree to be bound by these Terms in full. If you do not accept these Terms, please do not use the Site or its services.

These Terms apply to all visitors, users, and customers who book or attempt to book a vehicle through the Site. KefRentCars acts as a booking platform connecting customers with local car hire suppliers operating in and around Keflavík, including pickup locations near Keflavík International Airport (KEF) and the broader Reykjanes Peninsula. The actual rental agreement is entered into directly between you and the relevant car hire supplier at the time of vehicle collection.

We reserve the right to update or modify these Terms at any time without prior notice. The version published on this page at the time of your booking will govern your reservation. We encourage you to review these Terms before each booking.

2. Eligibility Requirements

Minimum Age

To rent a vehicle through the Site, you must be at least 21 years of age at the time of pickup. For premium, luxury, or large 4x4 SUV categories, the minimum age is typically 23 or 25 years depending on the supplier. A young driver surcharge may apply for renters aged between 21 and 24. The main driver must present a valid driver's license at pickup and must be the individual named in the booking confirmation.

Driver's License Requirements

You must hold a full, valid driver's license that has been held for a minimum of one year prior to the rental start date. Licenses issued in countries using the Latin alphabet - including EU member states, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia - are accepted in Iceland without an International Driving Permit (IDP) for stays of up to six months. If your license is issued in a non-Latin script (for example, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, or Cyrillic), you must carry an IDP alongside your national license. It is your responsibility to obtain the correct documentation before travel. Failure to present acceptable documentation at pickup may result in the booking being refused without a refund.

Additional Drivers

Additional drivers may be added to the rental agreement at pickup for a fee set by the supplier. All additional drivers must meet the same age and license eligibility requirements as the primary renter and must be present at vehicle collection to present their documents.

3. Bookings and Cancellations

Reservation Process

Bookings made through the Site are subject to availability and confirmation by the relevant car hire supplier. A booking is only confirmed once you receive a written booking confirmation by email. Please check this confirmation carefully for the correct pickup date, time, location, and vehicle category.

Most vehicles listed on the Site can be reserved with no deposit and no credit card required at the time of booking. This is one of the core features of our service: a low-friction, debit-card-friendly booking process that avoids large upfront security holds. Payment terms and any deposit requirements at vehicle collection are specified in each supplier's individual rental conditions, which form part of your binding rental agreement.

Cancellation Policy

Free cancellation is available on most bookings if cancelled at least 48 hours before the scheduled pickup time. Cancellations made within 48 hours of pickup may incur a cancellation fee equal to one day's rental rate. The specific cancellation window and any applicable fees are displayed at the time of booking and included in your confirmation email. No-Show Policy

If you fail to collect the vehicle at the agreed time and location without prior cancellation, this will be treated as a no-show. No-show bookings are non-refundable. If your flight is delayed, you must contact the supplier directly as soon as possible to rearrange your pickup time. We recommend purchasing travel insurance that covers car hire no-shows.

Amendments

Changes to your booking dates, vehicle category, or extras are subject to availability and may result in a price adjustment. Amendments must be requested via email to [email protected] with your booking reference at least 24 hours before pickup.

4. Pricing and Payment

Displayed Prices

All prices displayed on the Site are shown in USD unless otherwise stated. Prices include the base daily rental rate, unlimited mileage, and basic CDW insurance as standard. Taxes applicable under Icelandic law are included in the quoted price.

What Is Included

Standard inclusions for all bookings made through the Site are: unlimited mileage within Iceland, basic Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), 24-hour roadside assistance contact, and VAT at the applicable Icelandic rate. Airport shuttle transfer from KEF terminal to the supplier depot is included where specified in the booking confirmation.

Optional Extras

The following optional extras are available and priced separately at booking or at vehicle collection:

• GPS navigator
• Infant car seat (Group 0/0+)
• Toddler car seat (Group 1)
• Booster seat (Group 2/3)
• Additional driver
• Gravel Protection (GP)
• Sand and Ash Protection (SAAP)
• Super CDW / zero-excess upgrade
• One-way drop-off fee (where applicable)

Fuel Policy

All vehicles are supplied with a full tank of fuel and must be returned with a full tank. Failure to return the vehicle with a full tank will result in a refuelling charge applied by the supplier, including a service fee. We recommend refuelling at the Orkan or N1 stations in Keflavík town or near Njarðvík before returning your vehicle. Fuel costs in Iceland are higher than in many countries - budget accordingly for longer routes such as the Ring Road (Route 1) or drives to Landmannalaugar.

5. Vehicle Use Rules

Permitted Use

The rental vehicle may only be used for lawful purposes on public roads maintained by the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration (Vegagerðin). Standard rental vehicles, including compact cars and most SUVs in our fleet, are permitted on paved roads (F-roads are excluded unless a certified 4x4 vehicle is rented and the booking explicitly permits F-road use).

Prohibited Activities

The following are strictly prohibited and will void your insurance and expose you to full liability for damages:

• Driving on F-roads (highland tracks) with a non-4x4 vehicle
• Crossing rivers or driving through standing water not designated as a ford crossing
• Use of the vehicle in any form of racing, speed testing, or off-road activity not permitted under the rental agreement
• Subletting, re-renting, or allowing any person not listed in the rental agreement to drive the vehicle
• Operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or any substances that impair driving ability - Icelandic drink-drive laws apply with a strict BAC limit of 0.05%
• Using the vehicle to transport goods for hire or reward
• Driving outside Iceland without prior written consent from the supplier
• Smoking inside the vehicle

Any breach of these rules will render you fully liable for all damages, recovery costs, and any fines or penalties imposed by Icelandic authorities.

6. Insurance and Liability

Basic CDW Included

All bookings include basic Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), which limits your financial liability in the event of accidental damage to the rental vehicle to the excess amount specified in your booking confirmation. Basic CDW does not cover damage to tyres, windscreen, undercarriage, the vehicle interior, or loss of keys unless specifically stated.

Excess Amounts

The excess (deductible) under basic CDW varies by vehicle category and supplier. Typical excess amounts range from ISK 80,000 for economy hatchbacks to ISK 250,000 or more for premium SUVs. The applicable excess is shown in your booking confirmation and in the rental agreement at pickup.

Optional Full Coverage

We strongly recommend purchasing additional protection, especially for travel on Icelandic roads. The most important optional covers for driving in the Reykjanes area and across Iceland are:

• Gravel Protection (GP) - covers windscreen and bodywork chips caused by loose gravel on rural roads
• Sand and Ash Protection (SAAP) - covers abrasion damage from volcanic sand, common near Reykjanes and on the South Coast
• Super CDW - reduces or eliminates your excess in the event of an at-fault collision

Third-party liability insurance as required by Icelandic law is included in all rentals as standard. This covers injury or damage caused to third parties and their property.

Insurance Voidance

All insurance coverage is void if the damage or loss results from any of the prohibited activities listed in Section 5, from driving while impaired, or from a deliberate act. In such cases, you are personally liable for the full cost of vehicle repair or replacement, recovery fees, and any related third-party claims.

7. Limitation of Liability

KefRentCars operates as an online booking intermediary. We connect customers with independent car hire suppliers based in Keflavík and the Reykjanes Peninsula. The rental agreement is a direct contract between you and the supplier. KefRentCars is not a party to that agreement and is not liable for the acts, omissions, or failures of any supplier.

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable Icelandic law, KefRentCars' total liability to you for any claim arising from the use of this Site or from a booking made through the Site shall not exceed the total amount paid by you to KefRentCars in connection with that booking. KefRentCars is not liable for indirect, consequential, or special losses, including but not limited to loss of enjoyment, missed flights, or consequential travel expenses.

We make reasonable efforts to ensure that pricing and availability information displayed on the Site is accurate at the time of display. However, errors may occur and we reserve the right to correct any pricing errors before a booking is confirmed. In the event of a pricing error, we will notify you and give you the option to proceed at the correct price or cancel without charge.

8. Governing Law and Jurisdiction

These Terms are governed by the laws of Iceland. Any dispute arising from or in connection with these Terms, or your use of the Site, shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Iceland, with the District Court of Reykjanes (Héraðsdómur Reykjaness) serving as the court of first instance given our base of operations in Keflavík, Reykjanesbær.

If any provision of these Terms is found to be invalid or unenforceable under Icelandic law, the remaining provisions shall continue in full force and effect.
